History of the Mount Rogers Regional Adult Education Program

The Mount Rogers Regional Adult Education Program has been in existence for eleven years.  The program serves the Virginia counties of Washington, Smyth, Bland, Grayson and Wythe and the cities of Bristol and Galax.  We provide leadership and support for adult education and literacy services with emphasis on the development and expansion of quality family literacy and workplace education programs.  Our core services include Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary and English as a Second Language.  Washington County Public Schools serves as the fiscal agent for this program, and a representative from each locality serves on a governing board.

Definition of the Adult Education Program 

An instructional program below the college credit level provided by public schools for persons over the age of compulsory school attendance who are not enrolled in the regular public school program, including adult basic education, credit programs, cultural adult education, external diploma programs, general adult education and general educational development programs. (22.1-223 Code of Virginia)
